A Level 2 home charger is a 32-amp continuous-load circuit operating for 6–12 hours overnight, every night, for a decade. It's not a powerpoint. It's not a light fitting. It's the highest-utilization circuit most homes will ever install — and the one with the most downstream consequences if it's done poorly.

The majority of bad EV install stories start with an electrician who assumed the panel could handle 32A of new load without checking. Then the induction cooktop and the EV run simultaneously on a winter evening, and the main trips with the fridge and WiFi router attached.

Typical install is 3–5 hours. Cable run, circuit protection, charger mount, commissioning, app setup, and a full charge test before we leave.

The questions we get from every new EV owner.

Do I really need a Level 2 charger or is the portable cable enough?

The emergency cable that comes with most EVs charges at about 2.4kW — adding roughly 10–15km of range per hour. Fine if you drive short distances, live with a small battery EV, and always plug in overnight. For most households, a 7kW Level 2 install pays itself off in a few months in convenience alone, and the cable in the boot becomes an emergency backup.

Will I need a panel upgrade?

Usually no, but sometimes yes. Modern homes with 100A supply and a recent switchboard almost always have room for a single 32A EV circuit. Older homes (pre-1990s) or homes with existing heavy loads (ducted A/C + induction + pool pump) often need a subpanel or a service upgrade. We'll tell you on the free assessment — before you commit to anything.

Can I charge two EVs from one charger?

Not from a single unit simultaneously, but dual-unit load-sharing setups are a common ask. The two chargers coordinate via their app or controller to stay within your supply limit — one charges fast while the other waits, then they swap. Total install for a two-charger setup runs roughly $1,650–$2,400 depending on cable runs.

What happens if I change EV brands later?

Tesla's wall connector uses the Tesla-specific plug (via adapter for non-Tesla EVs). Every other major brand uses Type 2, which works with every EV sold in Australia. If you anticipate changing brands, we'll often recommend a Type 2 charger rather than a Tesla-specific unit — future-proofs the install.

Do I qualify for any EV rebates?

NSW currently has no standing rebate specific to home EV charger installs (some past programs have ended). ARENA-funded trials and utility-specific programs pop up occasionally — we track them and will flag any relevant rebates on the assessment. Some home insurers now discount premiums for Level 2 installs — worth asking your broker.

How far can the charger be from the panel?

Practically, up to about 50m before cable sizing becomes expensive. The most common constraint isn't distance — it's cable path. Garages detached from the main house, long underground runs, and routes that cross common property (strata) all add scope. The free assessment exists specifically to map this before you get a quote.
